Why Resident Alien‘s Linda Hamilton is done with the Terminator franchise

“I’ve done it,” she said over a Zoom call. “I can say very definitively [that] I have done the bookends to my career, the first one and then Dark Fate, I’m done. I want to smile on film. I know that just shocks you to hear that, but I would like to smile on film a little bit. So I want to sort of step back from the tough guys and see what happens. Pray for me on that. I might be retired [laughs].”

Getting to act alongside an improv master like Resident Alien lead Alan Tudyk (Harry Vanderspeigle) helped convince Hamilton to move further into the realm of comedy.

“I don’t know if there’s anything greater than making people laugh, especially in today’s world,” she said. “I would love to be the person that makes you laugh. So let’s see what happens. Plus, it’s sort of like the final frontier for my career. I just haven’t really done enough work that actually reveals me, that reflects my light heart and my light touch. For some reason, that’s not what I get to play. But Linda Hamilton herself has a very light heart and a very light touch, and I think it would be fun to get to play that every once in a while.”

With all of that said, Hamilton is profoundly grateful for the opportunities she received after appearing in the seminal sci-fi/action franchise kickstarted by James Cameron a little over 40 years ago.

“I embrace sci-fi, and it’s a good thing, because it really has been so good to me with Terminator and all the films that I’ve done,” she explained. “But I really love sci-fi. It just sort of creates a vast array of situations and worlds that are just wonderful and mind-boggling and complex. I really do love the science fiction life and I love the science fiction fans. I sort of accidentally landed there, but I’m very happy I landed there. I’ll do the same work, whether anybody sees it or not. Do you know what I mean? Because that’s my commitment to my work.”

New episodes of Resident Alien premiere on USA Network and SYFY every Friday, with each episode available to stream on Peacock a week after air. The first three seasons are now available to watch right here!
