Always great to talk to you. This has been an amazing journey. As I’ve told these before when they came and talked to us, you know, it’s a story about a town and a family atmosphere with an alien, not the other way around, you know?
How do you feel about this family you made in the show and also Outsider? I think Harry would say it’s about an alien and there’s some stupid humans there living in this town that he’s slowly teaching how not to be so stupid.
I mean, it’s been amazing. The show itself, where we all get to play, is the biggest gift. The stuff that we get to do is because of the type of show it is. It’s kind—you know, it’s a dramedy—but it has such a range of emotion that we can play within it because I get to play this alien who’s crazy and does all these crazy things.
But there are also really serious themes within the show about humanity, what it means to love, and what is family—or found family—or home, all those questions. So it can be crazy, wild, and do stupid, insane things, and then it can also be very moving. That’s the thing that was really special for me about this show, with all of us playing within that world.
So, at Comic-Con, when there’s so many people here who love you for so many different reasons, does that kind of balance their desire to follow you—whether you’re Gary in Superman or so many other versions of you? Is it fun to see them fandoming you as a person too?
Yeah, I mean, I’m a lucky artist that gets to do a lot of different stuff. I have been in the sci-fi world now for a while, and it just kind of suits me. Again, it’s almost theatrical work. You mentioned Gary the robot from Superman. When you motion capture something, it’s really a full-body performance. It’s a theatrical performance, not just this little piece of you.
Certainly, Resident Alien was comedy, and I had so many physical moments—I just had my knees falling out and I would just fall down in scenes. That’s rare; you don’t get that in a lot of hour-long shows. So if people are into it at all, that’s an extension of me, and it’s heartening.
Last thing I have to do is show you something. We actually got a chance to talk to them, and this is one of your characters that had the most range. I want to show you this new version here. This came out here too.
I don’t know if this is a bag you would rock yourself too.
No, I love it! You can eat rocks and then, instead of throwing them back up to eat them again, you just pull them out of here. It’s beautiful. I love absurd novelty, and this feels very novel and absurd.
Well, it’s yours. You take it.
No way.
Yes, it’s yours. You should have it out there in the world, or you should connect to it too.
Thank you. It’s always a pleasure, and we look forward to seeing what you have coming up, as well as your podcast. So many fun things.
