Alan Tudyk and Showrunner Chadd Gindin Preview Season 2 of Fox's Grimsburg at NYCC
Step back before Onear —
show what was the concept behind it.
The concept behind it was,
it was originally, um,
slated to be a live-action spoof of Nordic Noir dramas
that these two other guys at Britne —
that Fox liked.
But then they were like,
“We don’t want to do that.
What we’d like to do is an animated show
about a detective in this sort of genre.
Like, how do we do that
and then just Americanize it?”
So, um, they brought me in on it,
and yeah, that was how it sort of started.
Alan, how did you get to be on the project?
I was asked to come in —
you know, it’s funny,
the real story behind this, it’s pretty silly.
I missed— I got it in an email,
like, “Hey, there’s this thing.”
And I was very busy at the time,
and I’m very bad about emails.
So I missed it.
Didn’t respond to it.
Then I got a call from Brian Helgeland,
who directed A Knight’s Tale and also 42,
and he said,
“Hey, my son is working on this show
and they offered you a role
and you didn’t respond.
Would you respond if you want?
I think it’s a good idea.”
And I said,
“Oh yeah, let me check it out.”
Then I read it and I was like,
“Oh yeah, I didn’t know I missed it. Great.”
So it was Brian Helgeland
doing a solid for his son —
but like, I’ve never seen his son.
I know he’s got two strapping young lads,
I don’t know where they are.
But it was doing a solid for his son,
calling me out to wake me up from my, like,
“I don’t check my email
because that’s how I do business.”
I am sending that man a gift.
Okay, so what can we expect in Season Two?
Season 2 is just going to be
more funny,
more crazy,
more wild Grimsburg.
If you liked Season 1,
you’ll love Season 2.
We take what worked best in Season 1 —
which I think, you know,
some of those genre episodes
where we sort of took apart those —
and we go further with them in this one.
This season we have a Knight Rider episode,
we’ve got a multiverse episode
that we sort of mess around with,
where we take and rip it apart.
We even have a Comic-Con episode, actually,
where they go to “Con-Con,”
which is the convention of conventions.
So — no, but in his place we have J.K. Simmons,
which is great.
And we find out that basically,
the flute’s dad is basically Knight Rider,
or, well, Michael Knight,
and that his brother is KITT —
so his brother is a talking car.
J.K. Simmons is the talking car.
J.K. Simmons is the dad.
Wow — oh, he’s the dad?
Oh good man.
That’s a huge get — a huge get.
Lots of gets on the show.
I mean, we already got some guests,
but now we’re getting more guests.
I got the tap.
So thank you guys so much.
Thank you.
