For four years, sci-fi fans have watched Alan Tudyk further solidify himself as a sci-fi legend after his stint in the fan-favorite Firefly by portraying the extraterrestrial Harry Vanderspeigle in Syfy/USA Network’s Resident Alien. Unfortunately, despite critical acclaim, the show will end its run after the conclusion of Season 4, but there may still be a light at the end of the tunnel.

At Comic-Con International in San Diego, CBR Senior Producer/Lead Host Grae Drake sat down with Tudyk, Sara Tomko, Corey Reynolds, Alice Wetterlund, and showrunner Chris Sheridan to discuss all things Resident Alien. “Actually getting to Season 4 and through Season 4, I think, is an accomplishment in and of itself,” Sheridan explained. “I can’t believe I’m saying that because I’m heartbroken over the fact that it’s over. I was shocked.” Tomko then chimed in, cheekily adding that “maybe in the future, we’ll do a movie.”

What Is Resident Alien About?

Based on Peter Hogan and Steve Parkhouse’s comic book of the same name, Resident Alien was created for TV by Sheridan and premiered in January 2021. It was swiftly picked up for a second season two months later, and the currently ongoing Season 4 premiered last month. The show centers on an extraterrestrial being sent to destroy humanity (Tudyk), but he soon finds himself unable to fulfill his duty after developing compassion for the people of Earth — most notably the son of a small Colardo town’s mayor, who can see Harry’s true alien form, despite his disguise.

Despite glowing reviews and an impressive 98% on Rotten Tomatoes, it was announced this week that Resident Alien would not come back for a fifth season. While the news certainly took fans by surprise, Sheridan had his suspicions and wrote Season 4 as if it would be the last to ensure no threads were left dangling when the final episode airs on Aug. 8.

Maybe in the future, we’ll do a movie.

“I knew going into it that this was likely going to be our final season,” Sheridan said. “Creatively, that was exciting because I knew we could spend the time wrapping up some storylines and driving toward an ending. I’m so proud of how good Season 4 is and especially proud that we were able to finish as strongly as we did, with a finale that is probably my favorite episode of the series. It gives Resident Alien a very satisfying ending while also leaving the door cracked open for any future this world may have. I can’t wait for everyone to see it.”

The stars of Resident Alien shared more feelings on the show’s end with Drake at SDCC, with Tudyk noting, “It’s not anybody’s fault. In the fan world, we’ve gotten really good reviews. I think our ratings are better than they’ve ever been. And it’s just what the business is doing. There isn’t any money.” Wetterlund added that new fans are still discovering the series. “We’re not being canceled for normal reasons,” she said. “You know, there’s, there’s abnormal reasons at play, but people are still discovering the show now, like today.”
